In appreciation for and recognition of the great blogging and content management options provided by the WordPress system, we’ll dedicate the first of our 7 Things You Don’t Know series to WordPress. So, here it is… 7 Things You Don’t Know About WordPress.

1. WordPress first appeared on the scene in 2003.
2. WordPress was started by developers: Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little.
3. At the time of this post, a search on Google for the term WordPress returns 176 million results.
4. WordPress MU was released so users could host multiple blogs run by other users on their single domain.
5. WordPress is an offshoot of a blogging platform known as b2/cafelog.
6. In 2007, the developers of WordPress made a controversial decision to not allow sponsored themes to any longer be listed in their official theme database.
7. Early in 2007, the number of Google searches for the term “wordpress” overtook the number of Google searches for the term “blogger”, both blogging platforms far exceed the number of searches for competitors Movable Type and Typepad.

WordPress remains a quality blogging platform that has evolved into a very usable content management system.
