The state of Michigan has much to offer for anyone who either lives there or chooses to visit there. Michigan, with it’s incredible amount of accessible fresh water, is home to many water recreational opportunities from boating and jetskiing to fishing. Michigan also has much to offer in terms of the state’s rich history, particularly during the formative years of the United States. But, here are 7 Things You Don’t Know About: Michigan.

1. Modern dry cereal was invented by the Kellogg Brothers when they accidentally created Corn Flakes in Battle Creek, Michigan.

2. Surprisingly, though not bordering on any ocean, the state of Michigan has more lighthouses than any other state in the United States.

3. Michigan’s Detroit Windsor Tunnel is the only place in the world where there is a border between two countries that is separated by a tunnel under a river that traffic can pass back and forth through.

4. While the state of Florida is the most famous peninsula in the country, Michigan is the only state in the United States that is made up of two peninsulas.

5. The Michigan Territory was effectively rejoined as part of Canada when it was captured by the British during the War of 1812. The area was recaptured by American forces during the following year.

6. Because of being surrounded on three sides by the Great Lakes, no resident of the state of Michigan lives more than 85 miles from open water.

7. Michigan is the largest state in the United States that sits east of the Mississippi River.

Michigan is a great place to live and visit, it has a wide variety of things to do for people of all ages. The state has also grown to be reliant on a great number of industries when it at one time was overly dependent on the automobile industry. Michigan enjoys it’s position as one of the more enjoyable states in the United States.
